Roy Acuff - Great Train Songs/Wabash Cannonball
Here is another Acuff LP I wasn`t planning to post because ALL the songs are also issued on other LP`s I have already posted or will be posting. Then I decided to post it just because it was issued with two different covers and titles. I`m pretty sure the first issue is the title Great Trains songs. Train songs was another of Acuff`s specialties. Happy downloading!

Roy Acuff - Country Music Hall Of Fame
Here we are getting back to the Roy Acuff on Hickory "series". I had planned not to post this LP because all the songs are on other LP`s I have already or will be posting. Then I looked again and realized the first song, Willie Roy The Crippled Boy, isn`t on any other LP I don`t believe (it may have been issued on a 45 though). I HAD to post this, because the song is a real tear-jerker, which is Roy Acuff`s specialty! So I though if I had to get the one song, it was just as easy to do the whole LP. Enjoy!

Old Joe Clark with guest star Jimmie Skinner
Here`s a sort of unique record. This LP is in a live show type format. Old Joe Clark plays both old-time and bluegrass banjo on this and does comedy. The comedy is some pretty tired material though. I got this because I like Jimmie Skinner, but the cuts with him I think are just dubbed in, so for me, this record is a bit of a let down, but I wanted to post it anyhow, mostly for the banjo pickin. Happy downloading!

The Phipps Family Sings Traditional Folk Songs
Here`s something I don`t usually do, post a tape. I just copied this off and thought I`d go ahead and post it. The songs are from at least five different LP`s. Enjoy!

Here is an interesting LP. I`m not going to try to say anything about it as the back cover tells all I could tell. Enjoy!

The Phipps Family with Helen Carter - Hills Of Home
Here is another great Phipps Family LP. On this one, they recorded with Helen Carter, which sure enough shows the Phipps` fondness for the Carter Family. Probably 90% of the Phipps` material was Carter Family songs, so I suppose it was natural for them to try to record with a Carter Family member. Happy downloading!

Roy Smeck - South Seas Serenade
Once again we have a dark, drizzly day here, so I think some Hawaiian music is in order. Here is a fine Roy Smeck LP with him playing Hawaiian music on the lap steel. Enjoy!

Cecil Campbell - Greatest Hawaiian Instrumentals
Today is the coldest day we have had here at home so far this fall, so I thought some Hawaiian music would warm me up. This truly does have some of the greatest Hawaiian tunes on it. Cecil Campbell was one of the greatest country lap steel players. He was sort of like Bashful Brother Oswald on the dobro in that his style sort of bridged the gap between country and Hawaiian music. As we know, steel guitar dominated country sound from the mid 1940`s on through the 1960`s, and especially in the 1950`s with the piercing tone in most country bands. The lap steel was the very first electric instrument invented and here is a good record as a sample of that early sound----Enjoy!

Roy Harper - Hear Them Again
Here is the last LP I have of Roy Harper with Blake Bynum. I have already posted two other LP`s by them a long time ago. I know of one more all gospel LP they had out, but when I see it for sale the price is WAY out of my range. It usually brings between $200 and $300! So if anyone out there has one laying around and wants to get rid of it cheap, let me know!

Roy Harper & Blake Bynum - Very Countrified
Here is one of my favorite LP`s. It`s not that I`m a huge Roy Harper fan as much as I love the style and sound of Blake Bynum`s finger picked guitar and his Dobro style (which he actually played on a National Tri-Cone guitar). I`m a big fan of the Hawaiian cuts for sure. Happy downloading!

Why Is Roy Acuff
Here is the next installment of the Roy Acuff Hickory material. This two LP set has many of Roy`s very early, most popular recordings. Thus the title... Why Is Roy Acuff, these early hits are why Roy Acuff got to be a star (just like any star, you have to have a hit to start you). Enjoy!

Good Old Mountain Dew - Banjo Songs Of The Southern Mountains
I`ve not posted this type of old-time LP in a while now, so here`s a good `un! There`s some great old-time banjo stuff here. One neat thing about it... the last track is by Samantha Bumgarner. She was the first woman, along with her music partner Eva Davis, to make a country music record, way back in April 1924. Hope you like this one!

Repaired download link
I was just told the link to download 15 Country Greats By 8 Great Artists - Country Music At It`s Country Best had been deleted. It was on Rapid Share and they have gone crazy deleting things lately. I have fixed the link with another file service, Zippy Share. Happy Downloading!
Roy Acuff - A Living Legend
Here is the next installment of the Roy Acuff Hickory material. This is a neat LP I think because it is re-recordings of earlier material he recorded for Columbia mostly. It`s kind of interesting to compare the two different versions of the songs, the difference in the sound of the band mostly. Enjoy!

Two new (at least to me) blogs I found that I like
I just recently added two other blogs to my list.
www.westernswing78.blogspot.com This has, as you could see by the name, early western swing.
The other is... www.tamtammelodie.blogspot.com This is a little different from what you might expect me to like. I`d say at least half of the posts are Hawaiian music, which is what I like about it.
Check them out!

Tommy Jackson - Popular Square Dance Music
Here is some mighty fine fiddlin`! Tommy Jackson perhaps had the most popular fiddling records at the time this was released, although fiddle instrumental records were falling out of fashion at the time and has never been mainstream since. When was the last time a fiddle instrumental made the charts?!
There were some great fiddlers recording at the time this was recorded, such as Howdy Forrester, Benny Martin, etc. This was the latest country country fiddling styles at the time. Not old-time, bluegrass or western swing in style, but a new-ish niche in country fiddling that could be describes as sort of a jazz or blues influence due to inprovisition, but still not as modern as such fiddlers as Vassar Clements or Johnny Gimble.
I wonder what ever happened to Tommy Jackson. I have never heard of him since he was a star fiddler in the 1950`s and early 1960`s. Give this a listen and enjoy!

Blocked downloads
Seems as soon as I posted the two new Acuff LP`s, Media Fire, the file host I use, has blocked them. Give me a little time as I look into some options----Allen
Here is a good LP with Roy singing some of the favorite songs performed on the Grand Ole Opry.

Roy Acuff Sings Hank Williams
Here is a good one for Hank Williams Fans. I think Roy and the boys were outstanding on Hank Williams type songs. As far as the instrumentation is concerned, Hank`s Drifting Cowboys were sort of a modern version of The Smoky Mountain Boys at the time. The Drifting Cowboys featured fiddle and electric steel where The Smoky Mountain Boys mostly featured fiddle and Dobro. Also, one of Hanks favorite singers was Roy Acuff, and it`s very easy to hear the Acuff influence in Hanks vocals.
Anyhow... here`s a fine LP for you!

Roy Acuff - The World Is His Stage
Here is an LP of live show material. The sound quality on some of the cuts is not the best, but it`s still plenty listenable. The sound is just bad from the shows, not because my LP is in bad condition.
I forgot to mention, there is another LP I have already posted (a various artist LP) that has two Acuff Hickory cuts on it that I don`t believe were ever released on any other Acuff records. Just search "15 Country Greats" in the search box at the top left hand side of the blog page if you want to download it.

Roy Acuff Hickory Recordings
Well folks, I have picked what I`m going to post for my next "series". What we are going to be looking at is Roy Acuff`s Hickory recordings. Very few of Acuff`s Hickory and later recordings have been re-issued.
As you may know, on my blog, I try really hard not to post anything that has been released on cd. There are four Acuff LP`s from Hickory that have been released on two cd`s on the Ace label, so, I will not be posting these four LP`s (although I do have these four LP`s). If you are interested in Roy Acuff and want to get these two cd`s, the titles and catalog numbers are---
Once More It`s Roy Acuff/King Of Country Music, on Ace CDCHD 988
Hand Clapping Gospel Songs/Sings American Folk Songs, on Ace CDCHD 999
So, just for fun, I have posted pictures of one of the LP covers that have been re-issued on cd because it`s sort of an interesting cover. It does have Roy on it on the stage of the Ryman Auditorium, but does not feature Roy and his own outfit, The Smoky Mountain Boys. Instead, as you can see, it shows Roy in the middle of taking a step in front of one of the oldest acts on the Grand Ole Opry, The Fruit Jar Drinkers. There are some pretty famous Opry old-timers here! To Roy`s right with the red shirt on picking guitar is Uncle Dave Macon`s son Doris, then Tommy Leffew on banjo and Hubert Gregory on guitar to the extreme right. Under the O in the word OLE on the guitar on the backdrop is Herman Crook, leader of the famous Crook Brothers String Band. In front of Roy is Jackie Phelps on electric guitar. The bass picker behind Jackie is likely Stewart Golden. I have no idea who the square dancers are.
Hope you enjoy this cover!

Jimmy Driftwood - Sea Shanties
Here`s sort of an unusual idea for an LP in the old time style. It does have some neat tunes on it though. This is the last Jimmy Driftwood LP I have ready to put on the blog right now, but stay tuned for more material!
