American Country Dances - 78 album

Here`s something a little different. What I have here is a 78 record set of songs recorded to dance to. We even have a caller on the sides. The music isn`t the typical style of old-time music I usually post. I`d call this music sort of New England style old-time dance music. The fiddler and piano picker are a Mr. & Mrs. Siller and the caller is Tiny Clark. I have no idea who they were.
Sort on an interesting fact about this, the Asch label was owned by Moe Asch, which I believe was involved with getting Folkways records started. Download this and give it a dance and shake a foot!

Janette and Joe Carter and Dale Jett - Live! at The Carter Fold

Here`s a nice one. This is the last Carter Family related LP I have at this time. We have live cuts from a show at the Carter Fold, which was (and still is) a country music show put on at the home area of the Original Carter Family. As I said with the last Carter LP, there`s no doubt when you listen to Janette or Joe that they are Carters sure enough. Happy downloading!

The Duke Of Paducah - Button Shoes, Belly Laughs and Monkey Business

Here`s an old country comedy LP. The Duke of Paducah (real name Benjamin "Whitey" Ford) was a comedian sort of from the Vaudeville tradition. His style was kind of a rapid fire, one liner act. His favorite subject was his "big fat wife". He was on the Grand Ole Opry for many years. By the time he recorded this LP he was sort of semi-retired I believe.   The material on this LP is a little racy, but pretty mild for today`s standards. When this LP came out, a good part of the jokes on it couldn`t have been used on the radio. The material is mostly suggestive type jokes without any real "nastiness" on it, it just creates the images in your imagination. Happy laughing!

Zeb Harrelson and M.B. Padgett on OKeh 45078

Zeb Harrelson and M.B. Padgett / OKeh 45078
Soldier`s Joy / Finger Ring
recorded October 28, 1926 in Atlanta, Georgia

Here is another disc in our "series" of "complete recorded out-put" of an artists. I know absolutely nothing about these performers. Soldier`s Joy is of course a very common tune. Finger Ring sounds like it may be related to the song Cindy and has a vocal in it. They have a pretty good Georgia sound. The record is in VERY rough condition and the sound is pretty noisy, but not to bad for how rough the disc is. This is also an acoustic (pre-microphone) recording, so the sound is a little thin anyhow. Enjoy!

Joe and Janette Carter LP

As most of you know who follow my blog, I had been running sort of a Mother Maybelle Carter series. I forgot to mention that the last Carter Family LP I posted was the last Mother Maybelle related item I have at this time. So, I do have a few more Carter Family related things I can post. So what I have here is the son and daughter of A.P. and Sara Carter, Joe and Janette. If you listen to them for five seconds there`s no doubt they are Carter`s! Give it a download and enjoy!

Gypsy Rose Lee Remembers Burlesque

Here`s and oddity in my archive, and the label is Stereoddities. That`s pretty funny, at least to me. Anyhow, what we have here is the performer Gypsy Rose Lee talking about being in the business and sort of a show performance on the record. A fun listen!

Sid Harkreader / George Reneau - Vocalion 15366

Sid Harkreader - George Reneau / Vocalion 15366
Dark Eyes / On Top Of Old Smoky
A side recorded April 13, 1925 in New York City, New York / B side recorded October 15, 1925 in New York City, New York
Here`s a bit of an oddity, two different artists on one 78. Actually it wasn`t too uncommon for some record companies in the 1920`s to do this with country records.
Fiddlin` Sid Harkreader was an early star on the Grand Ole Opry and in his first session  recorded on his own and with Uncle Dave Macon. Sid was of course known as an old time fiddler, but plays guitar on this old love song.
George Reneau was a blind songster from the Knoxville, Tennessee area. Here he is singing and playing another old love song that`s sort of a "spit in your eye" to unfaithful lovers and lovers that play "coy".

Louie Clark - The Whispering Hills

Here`s a really neat LP from the Rimrock label, which was owned by Wayne Raney. I have no real information about Mr. Clark, except to say that according to the LP jacket that he wrote the tunes on the LP, which is quite an accomplishment in my opinion. In my opinion, this is a must hear!

Cruthers Brothers - OKeh 45307

Cruthers Brothers / OKeh 45307
Carolina Moon / Wednesday Night Waltz
recorded February 19, 1929 in New York City, New York
This is apparently is the only record made by this "brother" act. They may have not even been brothers. According to the Country Music Records discography book by Tony Russell the people on this disc is Smith Ballew and Saxie Dowell. And I`d say they are the vocalists only, just guessing. I have no idea who these two were. The songs are both songs that were fairly new and pretty popular at the time this was recorded. The disc starts out pretty noisy on both sides but quietens down quite a bit pretty quick. Enjoy!

The Original Carter Family from 1936 Radio Transcripts

Here`s the next Maybelle Carter related LP I have. Neat stuff to be able to hear these old radio shows!

Hal Aloma And His Hawaiians - two 78 albums on Decca

Happy New Year neighbors of the Archive! The weather has sure turned cold so I thought maybe some Hawaiian music would maybe warm us up. What I have here is two 78 album sets of fine Hawaiian music by Hal Aloma And His Hawaiians. Enjoy!
So first we have Album No. A-429 with the song list on the cover. The inside of the album is blank. This would be Vol.1, although when they issued this set they may not have known there`d be a Vol.2.

And of course next we have Album No. A-506, which Actually says Volume Two on the cover. The songs are also on the cover of this album like "Volume 1", but the inside of this album is not blank.
