Why Is Roy Acuff
Here is the next installment of the Roy Acuff Hickory material. This two LP set has many of Roy`s very early, most popular recordings. Thus the title... Why Is Roy Acuff, these early hits are why Roy Acuff got to be a star (just like any star, you have to have a hit to start you). Enjoy!

Thanks so much for the recent postings of Acuff's early Hickory material. This is among some of his better work - lacking the edge of his latter Columbia material, but nonetheless nice stuff. He had a great band during this time period. In my judgment, the only recordings that I'd place ahead of these are his work for Capitol, which is oft overlooked - perhaps due to his short stay with the label - but for me still his top work.
ReplyDeleteAgain, thanks for everything you in making recordings like these available for us.
ReplyDeleteJust in case you didn`t know Joe, Bear Family has issued a 2 disc set of all the Capitol stuff about 10 years ago.
Bear Family is now working on an Acuff set of all the Columbia/ARC material, but I`d say it still may be a year or so before it comes out.
Thanks for heads up - I have the 2 disc set (though I had some it on vinyl). I think I have all the Columbia/ARC material thanks to Harlan's Chronological Series on Acuff. All your efforts are much appreciated for those of us who lack the resources to acquire all the older material we wish we had :-)
ReplyDeleteFred, Bismarck:
ReplyDeleteAnything new on the promised BF Acuff set? Early in the year, County Sales said it would be coming this summer.
Sorry Fred, no news. I did see the same newsletter you saw, so maybe soon. It took them about 15 years to finally release the Uncle Dave Macon set, so I guess patience is a virtue in, as the old saying goes.

ReplyDeleteThank you, Allen. Yes, we old country diehards have learned to cultivate patience. We know God likes country music ... but I hope we don't have to wait that long!
How`s the saying go?---Patience is a virtue. To that, I say, pishaw!
DeleteFred, Bismarck:
ReplyDeleteAllen & all,
I get the Bear Family newsletter, and e-mailed the latest edition, inquiring after the Roy Acuff set we've been awaiting for so long.
Heard back yesterday from one Detlev Hoegen, who said, "It's still in the works, (but) needs more time to be completed. No release date can be scheduled yet."
So ... no cigar yet, but still something to anticipate! (I despaired of ever seeing a box set on the Coopers, but Bear finally came through.)
Here's hoping!
I`ve heard rumors that it`ll be out this fall, but who knows? I`m looking forward to getting it, some of my records and other items will be on it.
DeleteYou're right, Acuff is one of the greatest of al time
