Richard Chase tells three "Jack" tales from the Southern Appalachians

Here is something unique I found. A Jack tale is just a big ole tall tale told by country folks, orally passed down through the generations. No telling how old some of these stories may be, especially since there are references in them to royalty, which makes me think they were likely made up in old England or Europe, possibly five hundred or more years ago.
Richard Chase does seem to have a talent for story telling. He has a plenty pleasant voice and seems very familiar with his material. Download and enjoy!

  1. Funny how time works for you - I heard snippets of these while watching Andy Griffith a few months ago, and then came across Chase's books when shopping on Amazon. Thanks for the awesome LP!

    1. Ah yes! I hadn`t thought of that, but I do remember Andy telling Opie A few Jack Tales on the old show since you`ve mentioned it.

    2. Buddy, I was looking for a copy of Charlie Oaks singing HOME OF THE SOUL, and thankfully, I found it through a link bringing me back here. Your blog title has always played in my mind since I first stumbled across it all those years ago, and I think we might have connected once on Facebook through one of the groups. I don't even remember posting this comment, but thank you for managing to keep everything up so I can get a hold of that music once again, I'm finally getting back into it and will hopefully have my collection rebuilt in time, thanks to the help of yourself and others.

I'll see if I can find you in one of the Facebook groups (I was asking about Juneberry 78 and I think you popped up offering the use of your archive to hunt music down, but I can't recall which group).

I'll look for you, but if you happen to see this would like to get in touch, my email is spragues2828@yahoo.com

My very best to you, and God bless for all of this wonderful material! Please let me know if you happen to take donations, and I will financially reciprocate your kindness in time. My grandmother is soon to be 100, and I enjoy sharing this older music with her.

  2. It's likely that Jack tales originate in England, Scotland, and Ireland. There's a plenty of them over there, and they probably spread to the american south, carribean, etc and mixed with african tales and local tales to become what their own brand of american folktale.

    1. I`m sure you`re right. The areas these stories usually come from were mostly settled by people from England, Scotland and Ireland.
