Andy Devine in Tales Of The Golden West
Here`s a pretty unusual LP. Andy Devine had an unusual voice, and that`s what attracted me to this LP. There is absolutely no information on this LP jacket. I thought the disc would be Andy telling various stories about the west, but it turns out to a Wild Bill Hickok episode and Andy is in his Jingles character. I`m not sure, but I believe this was a series produced by Disney. Enjoy!

Some Lulu Belle and Scotty 45`s
Was just looking at some records here in the archive and thought folks might enjoy some Lulu Belle and Scotty 45`s. I really don`t know anything about these discs and I don`t know if these were ever issued on an LP, some may have been, but I kind of think these are unique releases only on 45. Happy downloading!

Lani McIntire Mission Beverages disc
So it`s been a long time since I`ve posted anything, and the weather is mighty nasty here today, so I thought today is a good time to post some warm Hawaiian music. This is a promotional disc made of cardboard, but the sound quality is quite good. I`m guessing this would have been made about 1950-ish. I wonder if these cuts are from another recording or if they are unique only to this disc. I`m not going to go into any information on Lani McIntire as he was quite popular and there should be plenty of information on the interweb. Enjoy!

Clayton McMichen - Joe Davis 3510
Clayton McMichen And His Georgia Wildcats - Joe Davis 3510
Give The Fiddler A Dram / The Old Hen Cackled
recorded August 30, 1932 in New York City, New York
The reason I`ve posted this is because I was in a short discussion about the McMichen discs on the Joe Davis label on Facebook recently. This was recorded for and issued on the Varsity label originally, the Facebook discussion mentioning Joe Davis label material was mostly, if not all, rented/leased from other labels. Joe Davis shellac is usually pretty grainy, causing the discs to be pretty noisy, but this one is pretty good sound quality-wise. Enjoy!

Georgia Fiddle Bands - Heritage 048
Here is just a GREAT LP. Trust me, just download it because if you follow my blog I know you`ll like this! How could you top a Georgia string band LP that has Lowe Stokes of The Skillet Lickers and Gordon Tanner (Gid Tanner`s son) on it?

John Daniel Quartet - Daniel 154
Here is a great southern style gospel quartet disc. Likely recorded around 1950. Echoes From The Burning Bush is a gospel quartet standard, and this is a great, peppy version. I believe in the 1940`s they were based in Nashville and were on WSM, and possibly even performed on the Grand Ole Opry.

Fiddlin` Sam Long - Gennett 3255
Fiddlin` Sam Long Of The Ozarks - Gennett 3255
Sandy Land / Listen To The Mocking Bird
recorded January or February 1926 in Richmond, Indiana
Here is what seems to be a pretty rare disc. Sam Long was a fiddler from southwest Missouri that apparently got to make some records as a result of a fiddling contest won in Joplin, Missouri. This was about all the information I could find on him. My copy of this disc is not in the best condition, but the sound quality is pretty listenable. Sandy Land has been issued on CD, but as far as I know his Listen To The Mocking Bird has never been re-issued, which is the main reason I`ve posted it here. Happy listening!

Vess L. Ossman - Columbia 3525
Here`s one we are going WAY back on. Vess Ossman, the classic style banjoist, was an immensely popular recording artist in the early days. I`m not going to go into much information here about him, as there is plenty of information on the internet that is easily found.
The song is of course the great Scott Joplin ragtime number, Maple Leaf Rag. This is a single sided disc, so one tune is all we get. I`m guessing this was recorded about 1905. Sound quality is pretty good as my disc is pretty nice.

Onie Wheeler/The Lonesome Ozark Cowboys - Agana 1352
I had someone ask me if I had this disc a few times. Apparently it`s a pretty rare disc. I think this may be the first disc issued of Onie Wheeler and his wife Jean before he started recording for Columbia. There are some Onie Wheeler LP`s here in the Archive so I`m not going to go into any particulars on him here. I will say his daughter, Karen Wheeler, has a website at www.karenwheelermusic.com that has some nice information.
I`m guessing this was recorded about 1951 or 1952, but I couldn`t really find any information about Agana and this is the only disc I`ve ever saw on the label.
Track list---
Shackles And Chains (the great Jimmie Davis song)
What`s Wrong With My Daddy (a sad number about the typical drunk daddy)

Welling & McGhee as The Martin Brothers - Paramount 3217
The Martin Brothers (Frank Welling & John McGhee) / Paramount 3217
Whistling Rufus / Climbing Up Dem Golden Stairs
recorded October 1929 in New York City, New York
Here is one of those `mystery` records. Why was this not issued under the name Welling & McGhee? They were quite popular recording artists in the late 1920`s. I`m just guessing, but it surely would have sold more under their real names. Whistling Rufus was a common fiddle instrumental. It was an old pop `coon` song from vaudeville performances. The real name of the song was Rufus Blossom and had words, and is sang here on this disc. We also get some good jew`s harp playing. Climbing Up Dem Golden Stairs is what I`d call a `white spiritual`, a song written to sound like an earlier spiritual type song, although maybe the song is an older song than I suspect. CAUTION ---- both sides contain words that we now consider very offensive racially! So, PLEASE, if you are offended by that sort of stuff, please don`t download this. At any rate - happy listening as these are some interesting sides if you are a fan of old time music.

Ferera-Franchini & Green - Aeolian Vocalion 14170
Here is a nice Hawaiian 78 I found while back in near mint condition. Sorry I don`t have the usual information for this that I usually post for country 78`s. This is an `acoustic` (pre-microphone) recording, so the sound will be a bit hollow. I think this was likely recorded in 1923 or 1924 by Frank Ferera, who recorded literally hundreds of Hawaiian sides for many labels. Enjoy!

The Phipps Family - The Phipps Family Quartette Sings`em Mountain Style
Here is another nice Phipps Family LP for downloading enjoyment! One kind of odd thing to catch your eye is the spelling of quartet on the LP cover, spelled quartette. On early 78`s from about 1924 or 1925 and earlier it was spelled quartette almost always, then labels dropped the ending t and e for some reason. I had just sort of wondered why that is.

Hobbs Brothers - QRS R. 9003 / Paramount 3224
Hobbs Brothers (Elmer & Jud) / QRS R. 9003
Turkey In The Straw / Hell Among The Yearlings
recorded November 7, 1928 in New York, New York
I don`t think there is any information about these musicians. The performance of both sides are pretty virtuostic and reminds me a good bit of the Kessinger Brothers. I actually almost wonder if it is the Kessinger Brothers. The songs are old fiddle standards. These sides were recorded by Paramount and issued on Paramount and other mail order store labels such as Banner, Jewel, Oriole, Domino, Homestead, Regal, Conqueror,Broadway, Apex and others lesser known. I also have the Paramount, but it`s in a little rougher condition, so It`s noisier, but am going to include it for downloading. Happy downloading!

The Crime At Quiet Dell / My Little Mountain Home
recorded November 4/5, 1931 in New York, New York
I have recently became a fan of this duo. I love the bass voice and Hawaiian steel playing in their music. They made a few hundred records, so I have lots of their music to discover. The song The Crime At Quiet Dell was about a crime by Cornelius O. Pierson August 27, 1931 near Clarksburg, West Virginia. Just listening to the lyrics is a pretty hair raising horror story. This song is a great example of a topical/disaster type song of the era. The song was recorded only about two months after the crime. There is a book about it called Quiet Dell. I have ordered it but it hasn`t came yet, I`m looking forward to reading it and comparing the facts to the song. The other song, My Little Mountain Home, is a typical yearning for home and simpler times song that was so popular in the late 1920`s.

B.E. Scott - Puritan 9167
B.E. Scott / Puritan 9167
The Wagoner / Devil In The Hay
recorded likely in August 1924 in New York, New York
I know nothing at all about B.E. Scott. I`m just guessing by his fiddle style and his voice that he was an older gentleman an I`d random a guess he was likely born before 1870. Berinda Scott is the piano pickers name, she could be his wife or a daughter. Both tunes are old standards, although I think Devil In The Hay may be more of a New England style tune and I would think by listening to his style he may well have been from New England, at least to my ears. The most fun thing about the record to me is his dance calls on The Wagoner. His voice sounds like an old drill seargent who has blown his voice out screaming at green privates. This is a pretty rare record, the sides were recorded for Paramount and issued on Paramount and Silvertone as well as this Puritan coupling. Puritan was a private firm that made it`s own phonograph line, and I doubt they recorded their own material, as all the puritan discs I`ve saw were sided leased from other labels. Enjoy!
