Welling & McGhee as The Martin Brothers - Paramount 3217
The Martin Brothers (Frank Welling & John McGhee) / Paramount 3217
Whistling Rufus / Climbing Up Dem Golden Stairs
recorded October 1929 in New York City, New York
Here is one of those `mystery` records. Why was this not issued under the name Welling & McGhee? They were quite popular recording artists in the late 1920`s. I`m just guessing, but it surely would have sold more under their real names. Whistling Rufus was a common fiddle instrumental. It was an old pop `coon` song from vaudeville performances. The real name of the song was Rufus Blossom and had words, and is sang here on this disc. We also get some good jew`s harp playing. Climbing Up Dem Golden Stairs is what I`d call a `white spiritual`, a song written to sound like an earlier spiritual type song, although maybe the song is an older song than I suspect. CAUTION ---- both sides contain words that we now consider very offensive racially! So, PLEASE, if you are offended by that sort of stuff, please don`t download this. At any rate - happy listening as these are some interesting sides if you are a fan of old time music.

Ferera-Franchini & Green - Aeolian Vocalion 14170
Here is a nice Hawaiian 78 I found while back in near mint condition. Sorry I don`t have the usual information for this that I usually post for country 78`s. This is an `acoustic` (pre-microphone) recording, so the sound will be a bit hollow. I think this was likely recorded in 1923 or 1924 by Frank Ferera, who recorded literally hundreds of Hawaiian sides for many labels. Enjoy!

The Phipps Family - The Phipps Family Quartette Sings`em Mountain Style
Here is another nice Phipps Family LP for downloading enjoyment! One kind of odd thing to catch your eye is the spelling of quartet on the LP cover, spelled quartette. On early 78`s from about 1924 or 1925 and earlier it was spelled quartette almost always, then labels dropped the ending t and e for some reason. I had just sort of wondered why that is.

Hobbs Brothers - QRS R. 9003 / Paramount 3224
Hobbs Brothers (Elmer & Jud) / QRS R. 9003
Turkey In The Straw / Hell Among The Yearlings
recorded November 7, 1928 in New York, New York
I don`t think there is any information about these musicians. The performance of both sides are pretty virtuostic and reminds me a good bit of the Kessinger Brothers. I actually almost wonder if it is the Kessinger Brothers. The songs are old fiddle standards. These sides were recorded by Paramount and issued on Paramount and other mail order store labels such as Banner, Jewel, Oriole, Domino, Homestead, Regal, Conqueror,Broadway, Apex and others lesser known. I also have the Paramount, but it`s in a little rougher condition, so It`s noisier, but am going to include it for downloading. Happy downloading!

The Crime At Quiet Dell / My Little Mountain Home
recorded November 4/5, 1931 in New York, New York
I have recently became a fan of this duo. I love the bass voice and Hawaiian steel playing in their music. They made a few hundred records, so I have lots of their music to discover. The song The Crime At Quiet Dell was about a crime by Cornelius O. Pierson August 27, 1931 near Clarksburg, West Virginia. Just listening to the lyrics is a pretty hair raising horror story. This song is a great example of a topical/disaster type song of the era. The song was recorded only about two months after the crime. There is a book about it called Quiet Dell. I have ordered it but it hasn`t came yet, I`m looking forward to reading it and comparing the facts to the song. The other song, My Little Mountain Home, is a typical yearning for home and simpler times song that was so popular in the late 1920`s.

B.E. Scott - Puritan 9167
B.E. Scott / Puritan 9167
The Wagoner / Devil In The Hay
recorded likely in August 1924 in New York, New York
I know nothing at all about B.E. Scott. I`m just guessing by his fiddle style and his voice that he was an older gentleman an I`d random a guess he was likely born before 1870. Berinda Scott is the piano pickers name, she could be his wife or a daughter. Both tunes are old standards, although I think Devil In The Hay may be more of a New England style tune and I would think by listening to his style he may well have been from New England, at least to my ears. The most fun thing about the record to me is his dance calls on The Wagoner. His voice sounds like an old drill seargent who has blown his voice out screaming at green privates. This is a pretty rare record, the sides were recorded for Paramount and issued on Paramount and Silvertone as well as this Puritan coupling. Puritan was a private firm that made it`s own phonograph line, and I doubt they recorded their own material, as all the puritan discs I`ve saw were sided leased from other labels. Enjoy!

The Phipps Family - In The Sweet Bye And Bye

Jimmy Osborne - The Legendary Jimmy Osborne Vol.2
Here`s some hard core traditional style 1940`s country (as opposed to honky-tonk style)! For some reason King decided to spell his name Jimmy on this LP, I believe he spelled his nme Jimmie, as that`s what all other records I`ve saw has on them. I don`t really have any information about him except what you can find for yourself on the internet, so I`ll talk just a bit about his music. His music was similar to the style of Roy Acuff vocally. Another artist similar in vocal style would be Howard Vokes. Enjoy!

The Atco Quartet - Clarion 5146-C
The Atco Quartet / Clarion 5146-C
The Rich Young Ruler / Don`t Be Knocking
recorded November 7, 1927 in Atlanta, Georgia
The only thing I know about this group is that this is the only recording they made and that the names of the singers were Will Hartsey, Grady Looney, Bill Cagle and Dee Abernathy and the piano picker was Velma Abernathy (information taken from Country Music Records). This was recorded by Columbia and also released on Columbia 15312-D and Velvet Tone 7102-V. I don`t know why Columbia released the same material on about a half dozen different labels as well as Columbia. I am curious about the name Atco. It could have been a company or sponsor name of the group, or it may be an abbreviation for something, the letters co may be short for company or county.
I`m not familiar with either song, but the Don`t Be Knocking side is a gem. Happy listening!

Twenty-One Years / All Bound Down In Prison
recorded October 29, 1931 in Atlanta, Georgia
Here is the last record Columbia released of Riley Puckett as a soloist. By the time this recording session was held the depression had pretty much destroyed the record industry. Most country records release at this time only sold a few hundred copies. Both songs are fairly well known prison songs, especially Twenty-One Years, as it was recorded by many country artists.
