Appology to Nancy Turner Brown

I had posted an old LP by Grant Turner called Grant Turner Remembers The Opry As It Was Then. Nancy Turner Brown contacted me through the blog Monday demanding that the LP be taken down because she owns the copyright. So---

Mrs. Brown, I`m very sorry to have offended you. I look and try to figure out if the records I post are still available new and didn`t find it, as it`s been out 30 to 35 years. Just to make sure you know, I make NO money from these posts. You mentioned about buying it in many catalogs and on ebay (as I did). I`m sure none of them are new sales that you could get a royalty from, as all them would be used.
So, once again I`m sorry for upsetting you.

Apparently, Mrs. Brown got the post deleted without giving me the chance of a day or two to do it. So, there is a chance that Blogger may delete my blog due to her complaint of the one post. Sorry if it happens to the many followers that enjoy it. We`ll see what happens here in the future----Allen

  1. I think that we need a more sensible copyright law on sound recordings.... such as 50 years, like it is in Canada. And here is an idea for the greedy Mrs. Brown.... If she is so concerned about making money off of this old album, and she owns the rights to it, why not put it out on CD and sell them? I am sure many people would buy them.

    1. sadly our usually sober Canadian sensibilities are poised to be overturned any day now, to be replaced, WikiLeaks tells us, by a National Policy dictated verbatim by US-based media giants by way of the embassy staff.

    2. Yes but when these laws get changed it usually has no bearing on titles already in the Public Domain, which I would estimate 75% of my collection is, and growing by the minute, as I understand the clock begins ticking on the copyright the instant the master is created.

  2. You handled this like a gentleman, Allen. It's too bad that your many followers won't have the chance to hear and appreciate Mr. Turner's music. One imagines this result is counter to the best interests of the artist and Ms. Turner Brown. Sigh.

  3. I probably would not have handled it so gentlemanly if it were my blog.... I probably would have (and actually have in the past), told whoever to buzz off, that it is my blog and I will do as I darned well please with it.... Most of these old recordings will never be issued on CD anyway, and blogs such as yours and mine give the music exposure that it would not otherwise have, keeping it alive as a result.

  4. Its a shame that people like you, that are presenting music to us, that would otherwise be unheard of. Pity Mrs Brown doesn't realize this. After hearing these albums quite a few of us search for our own copy.

Not only that, if Mrs Brown did a google search, she would have found many links to "Grants" album already available - for FREE

    Cheers for now - mike

  6. I'll download it now just to annoy her.

  7. I wouldn't blame Ms Brown too much: in my experience such opinions are generally the result of a novice innocent of all the issues taking careless council by people who really couldn't care less.

  8. Here's a paradox for you.... By posting these albums to our blogs, we are supposedly depriving the artists, or their heirs, of royalties..... But so are the Record Companies, by refusing to issue the music on CDs. No product selling = no residuals. While we are at it, why not make reselling media a crime as well!

  9. Thanks to you all for the kind words. I agree with you all, if it wasn`t for the blogs, people like Grant would be totally forgotten someday soon.

  10. Dear Mrs. Brown, What ever happened to people being polite and respectful to other people? Looks like the owner of this blog tried his best to keep from violating your rights to the album in question, yet you had to take it a step further. Might be a nice idea if you would write a note to the service and let them know your request was honored immediately and that you have no other issues with this blog. Otherwise you may be stopping him from posting totally legal music.

  11. One other thing ... for two days I have been trying my best to find confirmation that Mrs. Brown owns the artistic rights to the file in question. What would be considered due diligence in finding out this kind of information. I have visited more websites than I care to count and have yet to find such a reference. I am not saying that she doesn't own the rights. I'm sure she does. I am saying that it shouldn't be this hard to find information so that a poster won't violate someone's rights, especially when they are trying so hard to honor peoples rights to copyrighted material.

Can't we all just get along ... group hug!

    1. F.Y.I.: She's on Facebook, and has a group on there too called "Grand Ol' Opry Legends, Gone But Not Forgotten"...we oughta go over and bonbared her walls!!!

    2. You're an immature jerk. Why would you do that? This is her deceased husband we're talking about - you don't have the "right" to his music and ought to be grateful and then just STFU.

  12. Mrs Brown's petulance is foolish in the extreme because she can't make a dime out of her LP, and she has done her reputation significant harm. I think you would find that she doesn't actually own the copyright to the recording, and that unless she could prove that she does, your service provider would not take any action against your website. This is the sort of counterproductive reaction that alienates a performer from the people who they hope will be their fans!

In contrast, you have been totally honourable and decent!

  15. Just curious as to whether you had received any response from Mrs. Brown.

  16. Obviously , as a result of this womans rudeness and nastiness, Grant Turner will be forgotten even sooner.

  17. The last anonymous post hit the nail on the head!! I wish I`d thought to say that.

  18. Ask her to present proof of ownership, or remain silent, the nerve of some people

  19. I want to apologize to Allen and to all of you. I did not to be ugly when I made the comment, but I got upset for one reason or another. If you knew me, you would know that I am not an ugly, nasty, or impolite person, as described by these comments. I loved my father and I invite you to visit his memory site. If you go to the top under "MEDIA" you can click on many, many recordings including this album mentioned above. I hope you enjoy them.

  20. Found it online. I wish people would talk things out first, but that would only be the sensible thing to do. I see she's apologized, so I won't be too harsh, but I wish this obscure music were more readily-available on disc.
