Frank Wilson & His Blue Ridge Mountain Trio - Columbia 15372-D

Frank Wilson & His Blue Ridge Mountain Trio / Columbia 15372-D
Polly Ann / Katy-Did Waltz
recorded February 20, 1929 in New York City, New York
Here is one more disc that was the only side recorded by a group. The pickers are Charlie Bowman on fiddle, Frank Wilson on slide guitar and Walter Bowman on banjo. All these men recorded in other combinations with other groups. The slide guitar sound, which I`m sure is played lap style here, gives this combination a unique sound. Then with the addition of finger picked banjo gives them a sort of a parlor music sound to me. My copy of this disc is in decent shape, though both sides start kind of noisy but get better as they play. It`s plenty listenable. Happy downloading!

Roy Smeck - Hi-Fi Paradise

We have sure had some nasty weather the last few days, so I thought I`d post a Hawaiian themed LP to cheer us up. And who better to cheer us up than the great Roy Smeck?! Just the pictures on the cover perks me up just a little bit.  Happy listening!

Roy Acuff as Bang Boys - Vocalion 03372

Bang Boys / Vocalion 03372
When Lulu`s Gone / Doin` It The Old Fashioned Way
recorded October 23, 1936 in Chicago, Illinois
Here`s a pretty rare find! We have Roy Acuff and the Crazy Tennesseeans under a pseudonym as Bang Boys. The songs on this are pretty racy, especially When Lulu`s Gone. I`ve heard Roy Acuff mention a record he made early in his career he didn`t even want his name on, this is it.  He wouldn`t even talk about the record, he had cultivated a clean image through the decades of his career and didn`t really want to be connected to this. It`s a great disc with some fine music by the band. It`s a fun listen for sure. Happy listening!

Classic City Quartet - Columbia 15566-D

Classic City Quartet / Columbia 15566-D
I`ll Be Singing `Round The Throne Someday / Hold Thou To Me
recorded November 6, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia
Here is some good, solid old southern gospel, recorded right at the time of the stock market crash. This is the only recording this group made and I have no information about them, nor are the songs familiar to me. Enjoy!

Esco Hankins - Mother Left Me Her Bible To Show Me The Way

Here`s some hard-core country gospel music! Esco Hankins was a Roy Acuff sound-a-like, so if you like Roy Acuff, you`ll likely like this.

The Bill Ring Show - #31&32

Here`s the next Bill Ring Show. One little thing of intrest---the song Nichols` Junction is likely written by Doc Martin. On the west side of Springfield, Mo there`s an area natives still call Nichols` Junction.
I`m hoping to start posting more often as winter comes. Seems music related activity is easier to make time for in the winter.

1. Chattanooga Shoe Shine Boy - Bill Ring
2. Gosh I Miss You All The Time - Doc Martin
3. Rag Mop - Slim Wilson And The Tall Timber Trio
4. Crybaby Heart - Bill Ring

Akins Birmingham Boys - Columbia 15348-D
I Walked And Walked / There Ain`t No Flies On Auntie
recorded October 31, 1928 in Atlanta, Georgia
Here is another group that only recorded one disc. My copy of this is pretty rough, but it`s plenty listenable. I don`t know anything about this group. Both of the songs sound like they might be old comedy pop tunes of the Vaudeville type. Enjoy!

Carson Robison - Life Gets Tee-Jus Don`t It

Here`s a pretty neat LP. Carson Robison was a country recording artist from the beginning of the recorded country music industry and was on hundreds, if not thousands of old 78`s. He started as sort of a studio artist playing guitar and singimg harmony for Vernon Dalhart, then he started recording solo and with other artists also. He also wrote many songs. His specialty in the 1920`s was disaster and topical songs.
I`m not sure, but I think the recordings on the LP were the last recordings he made, and most if not all of them were issued on 78`s and 45`s. I`m pretty sure all the material here is likely written by him. So we have some comedy songs, some cowboy material, some skit type tracks and some topical songs that borderline on propaganda. He wrote many anti-Hitler and anti-enemy songs during World War 2 and some anti-Communist items after the war, one of which can be heard here. Happy downloading!

Chas. Winters And Elond Autry - OKeh 45207

Chas. Winters And Elond Autry / OKeh 45207
Hand Me Down My Silver Trumpet / You Tell Me Your Dream And I`ll Tell You Mine
recorded February 25, 1928 in Memphis, Tennessee
Here`s the next entry in my "series" of complete issued recordings. This is the only disc issued by this duet. This disc is pretty rough, but I`m pretty pleased with the sound quality I could get from it considering condition. Also there is a skip or two that I couldn`t get to play through.
Hand Me Down My Silver Trumpet sounds to me like it may have origins in the spiritual category. A pretty snappy fiddle/guitar singing duet. You Tell Me Your Dream And I`ll Tell You Mine sounds like a late 19th century tear jerker to me. The style is so different than the other side it`s sort of hard to believe it`s the same duet. Happy downloading!!

Joe Glazer - Songs Of Coal

Here`s something that I think will be interesting to several archive followers. I don`t really have any comments to make about this music as I don`t really care for this type of music that falls into what I`d call protest songs, but I still wanted to post it for those interested.

Carl Conner - Columbia 15076-D

Carl Conner / Columbia 15076-D
Jones And Bloodworth Case / Story Of Gerald Chapman
recorded April 23, 1926 in Atlanta, Georgia
Here`s another artist that recorded only one disc. I have no information about Mr. Conner. Both of the songs are topical type songs about murders. I haven`t done an internet search about the cases, I doubt it`d be too difficult to read about these cases.

Grandpa Jones - The Man From Kentucky

Here`s a neat Grandpa Jones LP, all the tracks are taken from the old color Gannaway "Country Show" TV show from the early 1950`s. For most Grandpa Jones fans there`s not going to be anything new on this LP, but it`s a good one just the same.

Wright Brotheres complete Columbia recordings

Wright Brothers Quartet / Columbia 15402-D
God`s Message To Man / What A Glad Day
recorded April 17, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia
Here`s another group I know nothing about. Interesting they call theirselves "brothers" when there is obviously a woman`s voice in the mix. They sound like what I`d imagine hearing at a country church at the time. The mandolin is kind of a neat sound for them. I think all the songs would have been common at the time in Stamps Baxter type song books, which would have been commonly found in country churches then, as now.

Andy Griffith - Just For Laughs

Here`s a little countrified comedy. Any Griffith`s comedy on albums kind of reminds me of some of Archie Campbell`s material. One thing they both did was to make a story out of a country boy seeing something in the city for the first time that he`s never saw or heard of before. Here, Andy Griffith describes a football game, Archie Campbell done a hockey game. I wonder which had the idea first, or if either one even wrote the story on their own, or borrowed it elsewhere. Anyhow... happy listening!

Elry Cash - complete Columbia recordings

Elry Cash / Columbia 15399-D
My Old New Hampshire Home / Won`t You Come Back To Me
recorded April 18, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia
Sorry, I have no information on Elry Cash. My Old New Hampshire Home is an old "left my love in my hometown" type love song. Won`t You Come Back To Me is familiar to me as a Riley Puckett song similar to this under a different title that I can`t bring to mind at the moment.

Elry Cash / Columbia 15457-D
Then My Love Began To Wane / When You`re In The Graveyard And I`m Away Downtown In Jail
recorded same as above
Both tunes on this disc are sort of a comedy love songs.

The Leverette Bros. - Lonesome Mandolin

Here`s a pretty neat LP. These guys are sort of in the style of the 1930`s brothers acts, but are also entertainers with comedy and broom playing. I`m not going to try to tell you about playing the broom, just download the music and check out the LP pictures. Happy downloading!

The Bailes Brothers - Early Radio Favorites

The Bailes Brothers were a brother group that were most well known in the early and mid 1940`s. I believe there were as many as five brothers and they played music with different combinations of brothers and also as more than one group of Bailes Brothers (sounds confusing!). They sang in a style that could be said to sound Roy Acuff-ish and sang many Acuff songs. They have sort of an intense sound with their harmonies and use it to good effect, especially on "moral message" songs. They didn`t have the polished sound of the popular brother groups of the 1930`s. They recorded off and on on up into the 1980`s as solo acts and different brother combinations. Give it a listen and enjoy!

Vernon Dalhart on Puritan 11347

Vernon Dalhart / Puritan 11347
Hard Hearted Hannah or How Do You Do? / Go Long Mule
recorded August 1924 in New York City, New York

Here`s an oddity. I`ve been transferring some of my Vernon Dalhart 78`s and found I had two copies of this, but the A side of each disc had a different artist and song. Both A side artists are out of my "field of study" and I have no information on either as they are both pop type performances. I wonder why they would have issued this disc with different releases on the A side. Dalhart`s Go Long Mule is nearly the same song as Uncle Dave Macon`s Go Along Mule that was recorded in 1927. Happy downloading!

Melton and Waggoner - Columbia 15423-D

Melton and Waggoner / Columbia 15423-D
In The Hills Of Old Kentucky / Underneath The Cotton Moon
recorded October 30, 1928 in Atlanta, Georgia

Here is another entry of my collection where I have gathered all the output of an artist/group. This is the only disc recorded by this duet. I have no information about this duet, not even their first names. Their style leans towards the Jimmie Rodgers sound. In The Hills Of Old Kentucky was likely an old pop song I`d say. It`s still performed by bluegrass pickers. Underneath The Cotton Moon was also a pop tune that almost sounds like it could have been part of a vaudeville type musical. I believe Clayton McMichen also recorded this tune. My copy of this disc is in pretty decent condition, so the sound on this is pretty good. Happy downloading!

Two more Hery Whitter 78`s on the OKeh label

Here is a couple new discs I have recently acquired to add to the Henry Whitter posts from the past.

Henry Whitter / OKeh 40395
My Darling`s Black Mustache / The Clouds Gwine To Roll Away
recorded April 23/24, 1925 in New York City
My Darling`s Black Mustache is sort of a comic love song. The Clouds Gwine To Roll Away is sort of in the spiritual vein with a comic twist.

Henry Whitter / OKeh 40403
Love Me While I Am Living / Good-Bey, Old Booze
recorded at same session as OKeh 40395
Love Me While I Am Living is sort of a morbid love song. Good-Bye, Old Booze is an old comic song. This particular performance is Henry`s worst side I think. It`s in too high a key for his voice and his voice breaks. It`s worth hearing to hear how awful it is!

Click here to download Henry Whitter on OKeh 40395/40403
