Green Bailey (as Dick Bell) - Challenge 425

Green Bailey (as Dick Bell) / Challenge 425
The Wreck Of Number Four / Shut Up In Coal Creek Mine
recorded August 29, 1929 in Richmond, Indiana

The Wreck Of Number Four is sort of a typical disaster song with a moral in the last verse that was so common in the late 1920`s on country records. I don`t know but I`d guess the song is based on a real event, as most of these types of songs were. The best side, at least to me, is Shut Up In Coal Creek Mine. There are several songs about the Coal Creek Mine and it shouldn`t be too hard to find information online about the mine and the songs if you are interested. I know nothing about Green Bailey except to say he recorded seven sides. He is accompanied by Asa Martin and Doc Roberts which recorded many sides over the years.
The condition of this disc is pretty rough so the sound is pretty noisy, but I have tried to clean up the sound the best I could and it`s plenty listenable. The poor quality of shellac in most Challenge label records contributes to noise also. Happy listening!

Aulton Ray - Champion 15277

Aulton Ray / Champion 15277
True And Trembling Brakeman / Just As The Sun Went Down
recorded April 26, 1927 in Richmond, Indiana

This disc is a brain teaser, as the B side is a different song than the label lists. The label lists The Dixie Cowboy by Alton Ray, but is actually Just As The Sun Went Down by Marion Underwood and Sam Harris. The two tunes were recorded at the same session, so the record pressers made a mistake, or something.Just As The Sun Went Down is an old Civil War song. True And Trembling Brakeman was recorded several times in the late 1920`s by acts such as The Carter Family, Bradley Kincaid, Cliff Carlisle and others.
My copy of this disc is close to mint condition, but unfortunately the B side had two different damaged grooves, thus giving us a couple of big pops on the side. Enjoy!

West Virginia Coon Hunters - Victor 20862

West Virginia Coon Hunters - Victor 20862
Greasy String / Your Blue Eyes Run Me Crazy
recorded August 5, 1927 in Bristol, Tennessee

Here is another post of an artist or groups only recordings. My copy of this disc is pretty nice except for a chip at the edge, thus we have pretty fine sound quality with a tiny bit of music missing at the beginning of each song. The artists are partly unknown, but Country Music Records (country music78 discography book by Tony Russell) lists W.B. Boyles on fiddle and W.A. Meadows as vocalist, banjo and guitar pickers unidentified. Your Blue Eyes Run Me Crazy is a fairly common tune, Greasy String is the rarer tune. Why didn`t these guys record more??!! GREAT sides! Happy downloading!

Here`s a really great LP of old time music the way it was in Washington state several years ago. There`s some mighty fine music on this! I`d really encourage a download on this one!
